We wanted to provide an update on two state legislative proposals related to immigrant workers in Wisconsin.
SENATE BILL 533 APPROVED
The full Legislature has approved. If Gov. Walker signs it, which is likely, cities will not be allowed to create local photo ID cards that immigrants can use when interacting with police.
ASSEMBLY BILL 450 CHANGED AND MOVED FORWARD
The Assembly approved this with an important favorable change. The Senate did not yet vote. That might not happen until March. The Assembly and Senate must agree before it would become law.
If fully approved as changed, this would bar local governments from adopting ordinances that prevent police or other local officials from asking crime suspects about immigration status and communicating that information to federal immigration authorities.
The earlier version of the bill potentially covered people who are stopped for traffic violations. The new version removes traffic violations, except for drunk driving.
