Benefits & Value: Utility Terrain Vehicles

Utility terrain vehicles (UTV) have found many useful purposes on dairy farms.

These vehicles have become a much easier method for traveling around large dairy milking complexes versus walking or using a pickup truck. They are commonly used in fields to check crops as they can fit into smaller spaces where other vehicles won’t fit.

UTVs have a smaller wheelbase, higher center of gravity and lower tire pressure which can contribute to the vehicles being less stable and more prone to roll or flip if driven too fast or steered abruptly. Take the time to train employees in the safe operation of this equipment, where the controls are and how to operate attachments. Train the employees to check tire pressure and oil levels.

Consider the following:

What are safe operating speeds around your farm?

Are there building alignments specific to your operation that require operators to take precaution?

Employees need to be aware of these conditions and trained on what steps to take to reduce the hazards. UTV manufacturers have established weight limits and towing capacities. Employees should be trained in these limits. Taking the time to train employees prior to them operating this equipment.
