John Holevoet, DBA’s director of government affairs, and the Michael Best team will examine the changing landscape for local farm regulations. Our state’s Livestock Facility Siting Law was meant to provide predictability and limit variable laws. Those concepts are now under threat. We’ll review what livestock siting does and how local regulations are supposed to work. We’ll also examine new ways that some jurisdictions are trying to sidestep the livestock siting framework. You may have heard about moratoriums on new farms, “study” committees and other new limits on agriculture. Examples of these can be found in every corner of our state. We’ll talk about these approaches and analyze their legality. We will discuss what the dairy community can do to combat new inconsistent or counterproductive rules. Finally, we’ll cover proactive steps farmers can take to head off issues with local governments before they even start.
