Your vote matters: Spring primary Feb. 16

Thursday, February 11, 2021   (0 Comments)

From Chad Zuleger, Associate director of government affairs

There’s another important opportunity Feb. 16 to speak locally and protect agriculture.

On Tuesday, election primaries will be held across the state to select local government candidates who will compete in the spring general election on April 6. So, it’s time to get out and vote for people in your area who understand agriculture and are fair-minded. These officials can hold significant power over how farms are treated locally.

The highest statewide race is for superintendent of the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction. Seven candidates are vying for the top educator position, with the top two vote-getters advancing to the spring election. In addition, there will be two special primary races for the Legislature. Candidates will face off in Assembly District 89, formerly represented by John Nygren, and Senate District 13, formerly represented by Scott Fitzgerald.

Voting is easy

  • When: Tuesday, Feb. 16. Voting places are open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. You can also vote ahead of time at your polling place.
  • Website: Click here to register, see the candidates on your specific ballot and find your polling place.
  • Voter ID: You will need identification (e.g. driver’s license).
  • Registering: You must be registered to vote. If you’re not, you can do so online or when you show up to vote. If you register in person, proof of residence is needed. A driver’s license works if the address is current. Otherwise, take a real estate bill or utility bill.

I’m happy to report that DBA members are increasingly stepping up to run for local office, and a few of your fellow farmers will be on the ballot on Tuesday. Local government needs farm voices more than ever. If you are interested in running for office and have questions, I can help guide
