Livestock farmers look to drought-stricken crops as forage source

Failed crops can be sold as forage without loss of insurance indemnity

By Edge Dairy Farmer Cooperative

Drought has affected a lot of farmers this year. Livestock producers are in dire need of forage, and many crop farmers have seen crops fail in the extreme conditions.

Many of those crop farmers are unclear about whether they can receive their crop insurance indemnity if they go on to harvest failed crops for forage.

Can they? Yes.

Crop farmers are understandably hesitant, as many were during the drought in 2012, for fear they won’t be compensated through insurance. So, it’s important that the word gets out.

As the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Risk Management Agency explains, once an approved insurance provider releases the acres, a farmer can put the land to another use, including haying, grazing or cutting the failed crop without impacting the original indemnity.
