Deciding Wisconsin's future: Why this fall is so critical

By Tim Trotter, chief executive officer

Wisconsin elections have long drawn attention in the political sphere. It’s the nature of swing states.

This fall will not only feature a gubernatorial race but a contest for a U.S. Senate seat, 17 state Senate seats and all 99 state Assembly seats. It is not hyperbolic to say Wisconsin’s future will be decided at the ballot box this fall. Our team is ensuring that dairy’s voice is front and center for candidates.

It’s no secret that fewer lawmakers today have direct ties to agriculture. Years ago, both houses in the Capitol were decorated with farmers. Today, there are just three lawmakers who are full-time farmers. It is imperative that we elect officials who understand that Wisconsin’s reputation as America’s Dairyland is so much more than a slogan on our license plates. It’s $45 billion in total annual economic impact and 157,000 total jobs.

DBA has always elevated concerns from membership to state lawmakers, including standing up for CAFOs, leading on clean water, stressing farmer-led innovation and ensuring a strong workforce for farms and agribusinesses. Many of these issues remain circled as priorities for our membership.

We have accomplished great things throughout the years. Even just last session, we took feedback from a DBA member on estate transfers and helped usher legislation to fruition that will help ease the burdens of passing on large and expensive farm implements and equipment. Among other things, we also helped secure funding for the state’s new dairy-heavy agricultural exports program, ongoing Dairy Innovation Hub work, cover crop rebates for farmers and grants for farmer-led conservation groups.

At its core, DBA’s mission is to move Wisconsin’s dairy community forward. We continue to put in work in the Capitol to ensure that happens. I once again challenge you to become more involved in the process — attend meetings, run for office, host lawmakers on your farm or just share your thoughts and suggestions with us to pass along. You can also engage with DBA’s DairyPAC. There are many ways in which you can make a difference, and we are here to help you.

While there is much at stake, there are ample opportunities for dairy farmers and allied businesses to positively affect the generations to come. Make no mistake, though, this requires vigilance and action — by all of us.

We thank you for the opportunity to represent you at the table and invite you to join us.
